USB Installation hangs at creating initrd SUSE 10.1

Hello everybody!

I've been trying to install SUSE 10.1 Box version base system (only from CD1) onto a 512MB USB disk. Copying and rpming packets goes smoothly, but after that the installator hangs on the next section, which is "installing boot loader", the exact message on the status bar is "Creating initrd...".
Clock keeps turning and turning and turning...
Does anybody have any ideas what can the problem be here?

Best Regards,
OOZIE

How long did it hang?

Did you do a media check of the CD and Hard Drive prior to installation?

It hanged for more than twenty minutes, what already was too long. If I didn't abort, it would hang like this for longer. The CD is ok, as well as the usb-stick I tried to install the system on (checked).

This problem happens from time to time on various installations
of SUSE like SLES 9 (with raid) or SUSE 9.3 (scsi?). I'm
trying to install on a USB stick with 512MB of memory. I don't really want to work it around, but rather to find out what the reason is. I've never found any answers for that.

Best Regards,
OOZIE

I see perhaps you could install the boot loader yourself on the first bootable drive so that GRUB will see the stick.

Not sure if this is what you want to do though, unsure of how you are applying this. Also is there a bios setting that will let you boot from usb?

Actually I've managed to do what I was trying to - make a little SUSE installation on a USBstick and it boots up properly (if I press F12 and choose booting from a USB-device). I just had to create a custom initrd (with usb-modules) afterwards and install grub manually, because it stopped at that point (oh! passwding the root account was necessary).

I told him to install grub on /dev/sdb1 (USB), but it never came to this point hanging at "creating initrd" I just cannot find any reasons for that. Any ideas?

Moreover, I couldn't find any mkinird script on the fresh new installation, what could have been a possible reason for a hangup, but I rather think, autoyast uses it's own built-in mkinitrd-thing.

You know what? I'll make sure, that mkinitrd gets installed this time, and I'll let you know if I can reproduce it with mkinitrd-rpm installed on the system.
