Upgrade Problems?!
 

Hi!

I have just tried to upgrade my system from 9.3 Pro to 10.1, since there was the option "upgrade" in the installation. It said that old files (that will be become newer ones during the installation) will be deleted, and I accepted. Unfortunately, I was not online during the whole and now I have over 1000 updates to do and the worst of all: my gcc version went from 4 to 2. I can install over YaST newer ones, but it does not help. Does anyone know what is wrong here or how I can help the problem? I hope I don't have to install everything from scratch again, but if it's necessary...

I had a similar experience upgrading from 8.3 to 9.3. I upgraded instead on making a clean install.
I had problems resulting from leftover files from 8.3 and inconsistencies between major release versions.
The only way to clear them up was to do a clean install of 9.3 (that is, I selected the partitions to install into, formated the partitions, then installed 9.3).
Of course, I made a backup of 8.3 first so that I could restore my /home, /root, and some files from /etc in order to save preferences, scripts I've written, configs, etc.
So, I hate to say it, but a clean install may be probably the only way to upgrade when the major version number changes.

Well, I have installed everything from the scratch, and now it seems the system is more stable, YaST does not crash anymore (and it does not take hours before the system is done updating 2 packages). It takes a long while, but it's probably worth the repairing... Gcc is now in perfect shape.

SO: NEVER UPGRADE SUSE COMPLETELY!!! (UNLESS YOU WANT TO RE-INSTALL AFTERWARDS)

in genral it woudl be ok to upgrade 10.0 to 10.1
or 9.2 to 9.3 but not through a major versiion number,
though i tend to do a clean install every time, as i have /home mounted seperatly
