I have SuSE 9.1, with KDE 3.2, and I want to update KDE to the most current version. How do I do this? Will my desktop get overwritten if I do this? Will I have the option to chose between the 3.2 KDE desktop and the new KDE desktop? Will that Lizard still be on the start button if I update... will I screw up SuSE linux by attempting to update?
Are you really Bill Gates? Is MS$ Windoze not working any more?
Check the webside of www.suse.com and search for updates (KDE).
I have tried to udgrade KDE, but this destroyed the menu entries. It is not possible to choose between the older and the newer version.

If you want to remove the old KDE I dont see the problem. Backup anything on your desktop. Remove all packages that are 3.2 except the base packages you need for dependencies, and install the newer version. If SuSE has things such as sound managers / panels, pre installed to your liking. You can reinstall them by checking what kernel modules and running process are loaded when you are in X. If you've been using X with this distro for awhile you probably have a good idea what you need installed anyways right?
At any rate most mainstream distro's make it fairly easy to change packages around, just so long as you know what you 'must' have..
If you want both, just install it and move everything over, no reason you cant split the dependencies up.
... my 2 cents
.. oh yeah..
usualy you'll want something likea file called /home/username/.xinitrc with the line:
exec KDE
I dont use KDE so maybe its kde (case sensitive) .. Some distro's have /etc/X11/xinit or the like too. Either way, X needs to know what you want to run. No need for KDM this way too..
Just install the base and a basic X setup (X org and blackbox and their dependencies) , the package system applications, etc (which is usualy part of base installs anyways for cli stuff), and install what you specificaly want. Your then in a position to update any changes (Security updates) etc, with a minimal of fuss but have a great running system they way you want..
Or go with a different distro or SuSE 9.3.. but $100 for something that should free? Never!!!!!!!
