first--why not install the current version (10.2)?

Have you tried searching with the package manager?

find-utils-locate is the package you're looking for.

replay..

Hi

the suggested was already installed...
infact i'm able to issue the locate command...
but the locate command is unable to find the database..
in mandrake and mandriva i was using slocate that the first time automatically creates the database...then i update the files database isssuing the updatedb ...

suse 9.3 is the package i have available...i'm installing it on a 733 mhz machine...so installing newer versions it will means to load too much the processor...

so the question is that i miss the updatedb command (logically i know the command must be issues as root or su..)

thanks in advance

i find this

locate and slocate are different. The latter is supposedly secure,
i.e. it handles permission on files. locate is available with the
package "findutils-locate", while slocate indeed seems to be missing in
SUSE.
- You never, ever have to launch updatedb manually. It's run
automatically by Cron every day and after each reboot.

i will verify and provide to update

Are you running updatedb as root?
