Unable to login / Suse 9.3 Pro

I recently installed Suse Linux 9.3 Pro on my home pc. Everything was working ok....but after I updated my NVidia driver & rebooted, I'm unable to login to my GUI unless I select Failsafe. I attempt to login & it starts to go, but then I'm booted back to the login prompt.

While I'm here I have 1 other question. All my screensavers run SLOOOOOOOOW, I mean real slow. I set one to show frames per second, and it starts at around 44, but then shortly drops to 2 maybe 4 if I'm lucky.

To give you all a heads up here are my pc specs

Intel P4 2.4/533
512DDR Ram
200 gig HD
Partition 1 is 160gig running WinXP Home
Partition 2 is 30gig running Suse Linux
Using Linux boot manager
MSI GeForce Ti4200

All help here would be greatly appreciated, as I dont want to reinstall it.

Thanks

At the login prompt, do this:

1) login: root
(enter root password)
2) startx

Post your errors, especially the ones next to the (EE) part.

Robert... you should always backup your xorg.conf file. I learned this the hard way.

Its in etc/X11/xorg.conf ...

Changing display settings (and a lot of others) makes changes to this file. I ran into the same problem whilst fiddling with my new ATI driver's control panel... Had to restore a copy of the xorg.conf file from my fiance's pc.. it wokred luckily.

As for the slow 3D graphics..... mine also does this. it seems opengl (firegl) is quite a funny thing in SuSE(linux) .... I have not been able to get it going propperly.

OK i'll eat my hat... i recently dloaded the nvidia driver on YOU, and low and behold... eish I've got nice openGL stuff happening... but this is on my laptop tho, nvidia geforce 4, I am still to get my ATI at home to work.

Thanks

Ok thank you both,

Unfortunately I just decided to do a reinstall of Suse, it was a fresh install anyway so loss of data wasn't an issue. But now I have a new one if someone could help with.

When I leave Linux running, after awhile my LCD kicks into power save & shuts off. Problem is after this occurs I'm unable to re-establish control of my pc. In fact it locks up. I'm forced to do a reboot of my system.

Any ideas why?

Thanks

I'm no expert (in fact i'm still a newbie), but when i had similar problems, the mouse wouldn't kick it back in gear, I had to hit a button on the keyboard, like one of the arrows, and it would resume normally (after a black screen that wouldn't go away otherwise). Hope that might help.
