trouble with wired configuration

Hello,

I have a bridge connection coming from a windows laptop, and I am having a really awful time trying to get opensuse to recognize and accept this connection.

I have opened yast, and set the ethernet connection to DHCP, but the problem persist.

What is the correct procedure for this?

after changing to network manager, It now detects the cable, but still no network connection, stays on setting network address. IPV4 Setting in network manager are set to automatic.

Hi there,

Which version of SUSE are you running?

By "bridge connection" I'm guessing you mean a direct point-to-point connection, with no router or other devices connected to this network.

I'm also guessing there is no DHCP server running on either of the 2 machines?

I don't have a suitable environment to test this, but on my openSUSE 13.2 laptop it looks like the solution might be to change the IPv4 address config from "Automatic (DHCP)" to "Link-Local Only". This should give you a 169.254.n.n IP address. Windows should do the same automatically if it can't find a DHCP server.

If this doesn't help, please post your SUSE & Windows versions, and the output from the "ip addr" command.

As an aside, you might also be able to use IPv6. An IPv6 link-local address starting with fe80:: should be configured automatically on the Linux side, although I'm not sure about the Windows side.

Regards,

Clifford

As an aside, linking 2 machines normally means using a 'crossover' cable (not a 'patch' cable).
(Just in case you may be using the wrong type of cable.)

Good point fatmac, I forgot that not all ports handle the crossover automatically yet :-)

rickyjoepr, the "ethtool" command will help you confirm whether the physical link is OK.
