Use good kernels and delete the bad from GRUB
When you installed VMWare, the package managers installed another kernel so you could run VMWare. You should test and see which kernels work and delete the one(s) that don't. To delete the extra kernels, either edit /boot/grub/menu.lst manually or go into YaST -> System -> Boot Loader and delete the broken/undesired kernels from the boot menu there. Also, when changing the boot loader configuration, you should delete the failsafe options for the kernels you are removing.
Also, just a heads up - 11.3 is EOL'd and doesn't have Evergreen support. If you like GNOME 2 you can upgrade to 11.4 - it still has GNOME 2 (and Evergreen until 2014) or if you like KDE you can go to 12.1 or even hold out until September and get 12.2.
