Ok, I am running suse 9.3 and I am wanting to upgrade. Should I go ahead and upgrade to 10.0 or wait until 10.2 comes out?

well 10.2 will not be out until October - so maybe hold on for 10.1 due early next month

go ahead and get 10.1 when it comes out. Then just do an upgrade to 10.2 in oct.

Unless there's some particular feature in the latest version that you cannot live without, "updating for the sake of updating" probably won't produce any meaningful benefits. To use a (bad) analogy, upgrading is a little bit like moving to a new apartment: if there is some clear and useful reason to move, such as cheaper rent, being closer to work, etc, then Yes, it makes sense. OTOH, if the new apartment would basically be no different than the one you're in now, what's the point - it would be like moving to an identical unit down the hallway from where you already are. Just my 2 cents

I don't think it's a good idea to upgrade whitout a very important reason, specially if this is the system that you use normally. Even more if your current system 9.3 works as you want and you have all the software that you need then you should think twice before upgrading.

Right now I'm running SuSE 10.1 RC1, yep I upgraded my SuSE 10, but the main reason was because when I "upgraded" KDE from 3.5.1 to 3.5.2 in SuSE 10 I managed to break my system in a way that I couldn't get it back. I still miss a lot my SuSE 10, it was absolutely customized to fit all my needs, a silly upgrade put me in serious problems and a lot of time spent in recovering my system. Still today I have not regained some functionalities, I'm waiting for the official release of 10.1 to do again a "new upgrade".

However, if you want to proceed with the upgrade, keep in mind the following:

- SuSE 10.1 requires more resources to function properly than 9.3. Specifically you need at least 512 MB of RAM, 1 GB is the optimal.
- Wait until the official release, I could say even more, at least 1 month after the official release. By doing this you avoid having some troubles with "hidden" bugs.
- Make sure that all software critical for you is running well in SuSE 10.1, you must understand that practically all the packages have newer versions, most of the rough edges have been polished but there are still some that don't.

IMHO -- Thinking of Linux as a tool to get your job done it makes sense to leave well enough alone and stick with what works. On the other hand, if you consider Linux as a learning experience -- upgrade with every release. That's what I do even though Linux is also my primary tool. I learn something new with every release. You might say practice makes perfect.

I agree with that. I do have the ram for 10 and I after reading the other posts I am going to go to 10. What got me wanting to upgrade is because I have gone to all the repositories and I can't get firefox to the 1.5.0.1 or 2. All I see in YAST is the firfox 1.0.8. That is great in all, but I want the new version. FYI, I have read the other posts on repositories and other stuff and I haven't been able to get it to work. I did do a work-a-round but it is causing some problems with crashing and locking up and the plugins don't work most of the time. This is a problem for me. I know that the repositories for 10 have the new firefox and 10 comes with the new firefox.
