Hi
below are the top output on my box and would like to know how i can utilise my memory in a better way, seems like the whole lot is used and the system is a bit slow...!
It seems like nearly all your memory is used but this is because 74716K is used as cache and this will be freed up if any process requires it. You don't say which GUI you are using but KDE takes up a lot of memory. You might try gnome or one the lighter GUIs (eg fluxbox).
hi
thks for the reply, I am using KDE 3.2 and sort of like it for a first timer to linux. I will be trying out Gnome eventually to see to which GUI I can settle down to, till then any pointers to free up the sys...?
The SuSE ftp install is closer to the professional version, as it contains the development packages needed to compile programs. NOTE: This is what I have gathered from those who have done the ftp install - I myself, have not.
If you're looking for a less resource intensive window manager, then switching to Gnome isn't going to do much for you either. You can try closing down the apps that you don't need.
From the command line:
Su into root
<password>
ps -ef
Kill <pid>
Then run top again and see if it helps you. Note that you shouldn't kill any process that is being run by root, as they could be a system process. A lot of processes are started when you login to KDE...
I found suse 9 slow no matter what I did. I have just gone back and tried the new 9.2 and it doesn't seem to be as bad.
If you think there is a problem, check your drive dma status (hdparm) and go into the run level editor and disable any service you know you don't need.
I have just upgraded KDE to 3.3 let me see how it fares on my box. BTW I just realised that I cannot enter into my cd drives. the CD icons show up on my desktop but when i try to access them it says
Could not enter folder /media/cdrecorder or for that matter cdrom what is the problem I just noticed it cause was busy on work. Have just installed suse a few days back haven't got time to go into it as yet.
and I am a newbie to this world ...just to remind all the nice guys, sorry for if Q's are silly...
