I've finally gotten linux to start working. Now i've got a few more things to clear up.
1. How do you (if it's even possible) run exe files with linux? (I'm a total noob at this so I'm not sure what the limits are to linux.)
2. How can i load drivers for certain devices? I've got the windows drivers but can't get them to load. I've got a graphics card (yes it's an ATI) and an ethernet card. SuSE recognizes both but I can't get online, and linux errors out with the graphics card and will not start the GUI interface. (Thank God for onboard video. ) if special linux drivers are required where would be good places to get them?
Files with .exe extensions are windows programs. It is possible to run some of them using wine. An example is Picasso. The Linux download of Picasso installs a patched version of wine, and runs the windows program. I did use wine to extract the Linksys windows drivers for a wireless card. This is because I use ndiswrapper for wireless so I wanted the .sys and .inf windows files. For your nic card and your graphics card you want to use Linux drivers. You will need to supply more information on the models you have.
Run the program as root: lspci -v. This will list the controllers for all of your devices. You want to post that here. Also post the output of the "lsmod" command. This command lists the kernel modules that are loaded. I am guessing that the NIC device was detected and the module is being loaded, but the network configuration is wrong.
You can probably download a driver for your graphics card from the ATI web site. Searching on this web site, you can find out how to install it. Before that, you could try using the generic "vesa" driver. That will get you decent colors and resolution, but not acceleration. Also, try the "sax2" program to set up the graphics. If you see video right of the bat, then click Yes or Accept at the prompt and see if you can start up the way you want.

Reason: spelling correction
I ran sax2 and it didn't help. I'll try the vesa display. The vid card is an ATI Radeon Rage 6 SDR. I don't remember the specific model number. Where can I get wine?
I will run the programs you gave and post the results back here when I have them...
Well I tried to run both programs but it said on both of them that the comand was not found. This is SuSE 10.0 btw so maybe the commands are different?
Oh! duh! Sorry for the triple post but I finnaly noticed that it was an "L" not an "I"!

Come on people! Any help at all? I know I couldn't have stumped any of you that hard! Please don't make me go back to windows. Thats the last thing I want.
The lsmod listing shows that you are using the tulip module for the NIC card. What is the output of the root command "ifconfig eth0"?
Also try the root command "rcnetwork reset" and notice if there are any errors printed. You need to supply more information on how you connect to the internet. Do you have a router? Are you using DHCP or entering the IP values manually?
The administration manual has a chapter on setting up the network.
The network currently is eithernet through one router. Also DCHP is setting the IP addresses and such.
I tried doing the "vesa" driver thing and it screwed up the whole system. I can't even get the on-board video to work anymore. Unless there's a way to reset that, getting the output of ifconfig eth0 will take a little longer. :/
You might want to power down and reseat the video card. Make sure that if the card has a power connection that it is hooked up. The "vesa" driver is so generic, that it should work with all but the oldest video cards. It should work with any recent on board video also. Especially if you are in run level 3 and you have no video. The x server hasn't even started then.
I would recommend backing up the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, removing it and rerunning sax2. If you have a working printer, you could try redirecting the output of commands like lspci to the printer, or printing like
lspci | lpr.
I would also recommend trying to print out the sax2 man page: man sax2 -t | lpr
There is an option to say which video card you are using.
I don't have any accessible printer. I've also reseated the card and it still hasn't worked. The video card it self is an ATI Radeon 7200 (aka Rage 6). 32MB on card memory and it does support 3D acceleration as far as I know. I'll take the steps you've given and will post again when I've done it.
Btw: where can I get "WINE"? I've googled it and I can't seem to turn up anything that looks right.
those are the links to the pages where you can get the detailed instructions how to install ATI driver. I normally use the ATI driver installer from the support.ati.com link. But to download it properly you should use Firefox not Konqueror browser.
Usage: /sbin/rcnetwork <action> [<config>] [<interface>] [-o <options>]
actions: start|stop|status|reload|force-reload|try-restart
restart|stop-all-dhcp-clients|restart-all-dhcp-clients
options: [on]boot,hotplug,manual,check,quiet,debug,fake
type=<typelist>,skip=<skiplist>
typelist: space seperated list of interface types
skiplist: space seperated list of interfaces to skip for 'start'
Btw: 2 things. Where's the admin manual? and how exactly do I get to runlevel 3 again? (utterly noobish but this is a first. All I've ever known is windows.)
Log out of KDE or Gnome, and then either select a terminal session to log back in, or press [CTRL]-[alt]-Fn to select a virtual terminal where Fn is F1 to F6.
Log in as root and enter the command "init 3".
The output of ifconfig shows an IP address. This means that both the interface and DHCP is working.
You can find the Administration Manual by clicking on the SuSE Help Center. It is the "References (en)" document.
The Networking section is Part IV, starting with chapter 18.
I wonder if part of the problem is that you have both an ATI card and onboard video. You might try disabling the onboard video in bios and restarting sax2.
