SUSE Monitor Problems
 

I was running SimplyMEPIS 3.3.1-1, and I decided to install SUSE 10.0, since I had been hearing good things about it. So I download the 5 CDs, do the install, blah blah blah... Eventually, near the end, it asked me to configure my hardware. Ok... so I checked my monitor settings. I have a Sony Multiscan 17sf monitor, but didn't see that option, so I went with the default monitor, except I changed it to 1024x768 (XVGA) and 85 hz refresh rate. I also had chosen to install nVidia drivers from YOU, even though I don't think I have an nVidia card (just to be safe).

So the install finishes, a long screen of text appears, and then... nothing. My monitor blacks out with both the power-saving and power lights on. Odd, I think, but maybe it's an installation aftereffect, so I hard reboot the machine. The SUSE GRUB screen comes up, I select SUSE 10.0, a long screen of text appears, and... nothing. It's exactly like the install. OK, hard reboot the machine again, select SimplyMEPIS this time, and... I see from the boot line that it's booting up using the 2.6.10 kernel, which won't work (pre-existing problem). So I hard reboot again, boot from my SimplyMEPIS cd, and am using it to type this. I have been effectively shut out of using either SUSE or my SimplyMEPIS.

I am inclined to think that I screwed up during the install. I'd really hate to have to reinstall SUSE... Advice?

Sorry, I stopped reading there.

Figure out what card you have and use the appropriate driver/module/secret-ingredient/whatever you wish to call it.

The point is not that I screwed up. I realize that. The point is that I am trying to fix it.
