suse for blind

Hello
I am trying to install some software for blind to enable blind people to use linux.
I saw an article about suse,
it seems that from suse linux 7, the suse distro has the screen reader suse blinux in him.
But I have downloaded suse linux 10 live dvd - and there isn't any screen reader...
I have misunderstand? maybe is it necessary to buy this screen reader?
do someone can tell me if there is a distro for blind?
Thank you

Dear Mooncar

Their acknowledged support of assistive technology was one of the reasons I use and support SuSE.

Don't despair we are talking about linux here not windows! SuSE have dropped a lot of programs in their releases lately though. Blinux is actually not a program but a project of programs designed for blind linux users, I have not used any myself because I am not blind. Perhaps various societies for the blind may be able to help you with assistive technology. Here in Australia I know some do. The people installing and facilitating this are often employed blind people.

A number of sites point to a now defunct link. I'd like to suggest you try this link which I have checked and is working ok.

http://leb.net/pub/blinux/

There are a few programs there that look helpful such as screader, brlspeak etc.

Best wishes

I have heard a lot of good things about SuSE linux for the blind ("blinux"), including braille support and screen reading, etc... Unfortunately I've never set it up or run it. There are quite a few resources online for finding out more about this (however to understand some of them you will need to brush up on your german One that I found is a blinux forum (speech.braille.uwo.ca/mailman/listinfo/blinux-newbie). Good luck!

Started using SuSE9.3 Gnome interface yesterday instead of KDE. Looked at assistive
technology options and there is a program called gnopernicus that is brilliant! You should be able to run it under KDE as well. I know in the past blind people used a command line form of linux with screenreaders and scanners to convert paper to text to speech. Then a lot of blind societies were forced to adopt JAWS - a screenreader for windoze, this threatened to close off the efficient textbased system a lot of blind people used.

Anyway best wishes for Christmas and New Year.
