suse and speed problems

hi

i just installed suse 10.0, before that i used 9.3.
kde apps seem to run a bit faster now but some other programs lag. at the moment i am having problems with ut2004 demo and america's army. both games have linux versions freely downloadable and i had them both on 9.3 too. in 10.0 it takes about 3 times as much to load a map and during gameplay it constantly lags. i didn't have that problem before and my hardware is the same.

is there any solution to my problems? i was wondering perhaps the new kde is eating up my memory more than the old one. i also wasn't very modest when selecting the apps for suse installation but in theory that should only take up disk space, not make my pc slower. :/

i have amd athlonxp 2500+ barton and 256mb memory. i probably don't have very much memory (512 would sound much better) but it was enough before

thanks for all advice

maybe u can check what services running in your PC, just turn off unnecessary service from your boot up script.
u can turn it off from yast.

You could try recompiling the Kernel to make it more optimized for your system.
But if games are the issue, it may be the graphics drivers, so how does glxgears run in comparison to your previous? What kind of card are you using, and which drivers for it(and in particular propietary or built in X drivers)?

i did manage to get the games run somewhat faster if i launch them from icewm. could i get the same effect from kde somehow?
