SuSE 9.2 Pro - ATI Radeon 9700 - 3D?

Out of the box, SuSE 9.2 sets up the Radeon 9700 video on my Acer Aspire 2012wlmi fine.

BUT, the 3D Accelleration is not working.

I have looked at the ati drivers here

http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/l...ctsLINUXdriver

But the X11 system has changed to the newer xorg setup .. and I though I should ask for help before getting in too deep.

I tried google, but found no sucess info regarding this.

Any help is really appreciated.

i too have tried ATI and found that i could not enable 3D. i tried "runlevel 3" install and everything. i found a complaint site that is dedicated to ATI driver support. go back to NVIDIA and not have a problem...

ATI's current drivers are not compatible with X.org, especially in terms of 3d acceleration. However, ATI is planning to release new drivers around the middle of Januarary to fix a lot of the current problems....we just gotta wait

If Im not mistaken, suse 9.2 uses Xorg 6.8.x while mandrake 10.1 uses Xorg 6.7.x I have tried both suse and mandrake and while I find suse easier to use as a linux would be convert, I still have to wait to switch to it until there are 3d compatible drivers available for 6.8

Well... I got my ATI 9700 Radeon Mobility to work in 3D with the built in drivers for SuSE 9.2

All I did was choose the video driver ATI fgl8x00 in SAX2, restart X, and enable the 3D Acceleration in SAX2.

Voila!

Tests great!

Will post bck if any problems. Thanks for all the info, the links above led me to the answer.

even with 3d enabled its not much. i had far better preformance out if a geforce 2 than my ATI 9600XT in linux.
i got it to work after a bit of work in suse 9.1. almost as bad as getting a winmodem to work correctly.

ATI is great for windows but very poor in linux.

That's right, ATI just sucks big timre on Linux.
Everybody should boycot their crap, claiming they are developing drivers for 64-bit and still nothing.
They SUCK!

I did some fiddling, for example dual head only works in xfree 4.3, but not the 1 in Suse 9.1.
I also had the drivers working on xorg 6.7 on gentoo. xorg 6.8 is no go at all!
Dual head on xorg gives a blurred 2nd screen by the way.

So if you want some decent graphics just buy Nvidia and tell all your friends to do the same !

Nvidia has 64-bit drivers (for a long time), good tv-out support, dual head configuration and easy switching between resolutions, just look at the README.

Hope this helps some folks
