SuSE 9.2 has no startup or system sounds-Rest seem OK

My last distro was Man.10.1 off and when kde started up I had a startup sound, I now am running SuSE 9.2 Pro and don't seem to have those sounds. I have tried to go into YaST and enable system sounds and then hit the test button and nothing. Normal sounds seem to be ok as I can play cds or wav files or streams online and it is fine. I must be missing a setting somewhere, can someone please help. Thanks

Did you try the configuration from the KDE control center? Or maybe it's just a mix that needs to be increased...

Thank you for the reply, and yes I have gone to the KDE control center and checked everything there and gone into YaST and enabled it all and increased all the mix volumes. Must be something else I guess.

TitaniumTaz/RoaCh Of DisCor

Control Centre > Sound & Multimedia > System Notifications, Event source at top choose KDE System Notifications, find "Kde is starting up", highlight by clicking once with the mouse, should say in lower tray "Actions" /opt/kde3/share/sounds/EW_Startup_1.ogg

Highlight "KDE is exiting", this will definitely be wrong, probably says /opt/kde3/share/sounds/EW_Logout_3.wav, click the blue folder icon, find and select /opt/kde3/share/sounds/EW_Logout_3.ogg

Click "Player Settings" make sure the volume is tuned up full

You should put an "x" in "Play a sound" and the "Test the sound" button should work

SuSE 9.2 has no startup or system sounds-Rest seem OK

Hey Pete M,
Thank you for the info, that is what I had done prior with no joy as I had another problem with the sound itself. After a reinstall and doing what you suggested it did produce the startup sound. I have since blown the processor, so am out of commision for a bit with the Linux box, but like Arnold says "I'll Be Back". Again Thanks

Check the following -

for sounds, as root:
/opt/kde3/bin/startkde

test -n "$KDEWM"&&KDEWM="--windowmanager $KDEWM"
kdeinit +knotify
kwrapper ksmserver $KDEWM

add the kdeinit line, it's probably missing

Hey adamberns,
Thank you for the reply. Problem has been resolved thru a reinstall. Was working fine prior to loss of processor which has put linux on hold for the time being.
