suse 9.2 - crash during 1st boot
 

hi!

I've now tried to install 9.2pro several times (5cd version) - everytime during the 1st boot after installation the system starts to crash

during KDE startup kbuildsycoca sends a crash message - Linux continues loading - I get to the desktop - when opening the menu - same crash again+kcmshell+kicker
afterwards taskbar 's gone

during installation, I let the KDE update, but keep the original kernel (kernel update resulted in even more problems)

please help - I've got no idea where the problem results from?!

PC - IntelPentium 4 - 2.4 GHz - 512 MB
LiLo bootloader with generic code (Grub wouldn't start correctly)
1028 MB - swap; 20 GB Reiser - /

try to install in safe mode
 

Then you might start acpi or apm ++ after you have installed, This really screwed up a laptop I tried to install on untill I treid a safe install, or atleast with acpi disabled (the laptop works fine with acpi enabled after install)

If this does not work, then I guess you downloaded (Oh yeah, you downloaded it) it and got incomplete iso's. If you have or had some md5 numbers you could check the isos in k3b or an md5 checking program of sorts. There may be two reasons why you downloaded this suse, you either didn't have the cash for the retail version and wanted to read up on your Suse before you bought the next version, Or you are a windows user who have gotten your moral destroyed by the widespread pirating coulture. Either way, the 5 disc download is not the way to go, it is incomplete in comparrison to the dvd and ftp (belive me I know) So the best thing is to either buy the package (if you dont want the manual ot you are a student, you might get away with the student or upgrade packages.) Or wait until mid-January for the ftp version.

One last thing is, make a /home partition. This way you won't loose all your personal files or favorite wallpaper each time you try to install a new distro. You can also inastall several distros and share the /home partition. It took me a while before I discovered the true value of /home.
