Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

At the end of the suse 9.1 installation, it says configuring hardware, and then the screen goes black. Nothing happens after this in ordor to get everything going again, I must restart the computer it then starts up in SuSE, I have a graphical interface and everything, but then it says that my monitor didn't send it's x y coordinates or size to it and asks me if I wish to configure it. I click yes and the screen goes black, only way to continue is to restart, it does the same thing when I try to configure my video card.
Here's my system:
Intel Celeron 1095mhz
382 mb ram
32 meg nVidia Geforce 2 MX/MX 400 video card
my monitor is a Gateway EV700
I'm trying to install suse 9.1 personal. Please help, i'm tired of windows.
I am having a similar problem with Suse 9.1 personal and Gateway EV700. I went throught the installation (not graphical) and chose my monitor during install. I can't remember the screen resolution but I know I didn't change it. I never get to a GUI. How would I change screen resolution now? I beleive that is my problem. I think.
I am running (old machine)
SuSe 9.1 personal
64 mg ram
3 gig hdd
EV700 Gateway monitor
I am also a newbie to Linux. Thanks for your help.
I have been reading more posts and I have a screen! I hit ctrl, alt, f2 then f3 and I have text/command line. No GUI though. Where do I go from here? As in the post before, I am thinking I may have to change my resolution. How do I do this from the command line?
