i cant log in as root.well,i can,but i cant do what i am trying to do.
i have to give root password to shut my machine down.
when i log in as root,i get YaST,and i cant do anything beyond what is in yast.how can i get my root back and working like it is supposed to.also,i try to log in as SU,and then the shell closes.no errors,no nothing.just closes down.i am trying to install unreal tournament 2004,and typical of linux,the simple has been made difficult for no good reason.help!
I don't understand well what you mean by "icant do anything beyond what is in yast" but maybe it's about the "session" in the login screen of kdm (installed by default);
You have to enter root as user, his password, but before hitting enter, select menu, then session and try something else than admin ...
I was running into the same problem, no root login through KDE, I tried what eescar says: You have to enter root as user, his password, but before hitting enter, select menu, then session and try something else than admin ...
I did the same, and selected KDE on the menu, IT WORKED !!!!, I'm back into bussines
I have suse 9.1
I have exactly the same problem to log in as root, but I cannot chose something else when I select menu. the only possibilities to press are
re-start the X-server
or
end
does somebody have an idea?

When you first hit Menu, you should see 3 options:
Session Type Alt - T
Restart X-Server Alt - E
End Alt - S
You must click on Session Type or press Alt - T, then you'll see another menu with some other options, now you should select KDE, and you'll be logged in as ROOT, but before hitting on MENU, type in ROOT for user and the proper password for it.
If you are unable to click on Session Type, then you might have another type of error.
