I recently installed SUSE 9.1 Pro on my home system and have so far avoided benefiting from the 3D capabilities of my ATI Radeon All-in-Wonder 9800 card. So, now I am ready. I went to the SUSE ftp site and downloaded the following files:
According to the steps in the readme file, I should Update XFree86 drivers by typing # rpm -Uhv fglrx-8.12.10-1.1.i586.rpm. Should this and all the other steps be done in Text mode (Init 3)?
Also, is it ok that I have already installed the kernel-source, make and gcc with YaST?
There have been numerous posts on LinuxQuestions and other sites on this topic, so I really appreciate your time and patience with my questions.
Kind regards,
-F_B

I would think it best to stop X (init 3) before installing. Under RH, I have has to do this from init 3. Kernel source, make and gcc installed through YaST should be fine, in fact it's required.
Good luck, let us know if it works! I will attempt to do the same Tuesday under SuSE 9.3 Pro.
I finally went through the steps outlined in the README and was able to get 3D acceleration to work. Glxgears indicated something like 4000+ fps after 3D was enabled. While I was following the directions in the README, I wondered why I needed to update/recompile my kernel in order to get this to work? Why was I unable to just use Sax2 to achieve the same result? Do other Linux distributions or graphics cards (i.e. NVIDIA) require manual kernel changes to provide 3D? Any thoughts?
Kind regards,
-F_B
PS- Has anyone been able to get their SUSE system to preform 3D acceleration with an ATI card and install/run ldraw (LEGO CAD)?
