SuSE 9.1 + Intel Pro 1000CT Gigabit Enet
 

Hi all,

I'm trying to perform an FTP install of 9.1 Pro onto my Asus P4C800E-Deluxe based machine. This mobo has the Intel CSA 82547EI Gigabit Ethernet Controller chipset which works fine under Windoze XP.

SuSE's installation routine identifies this chipset correctly and loads the e1000 module accordingly.

However, despite the link coming up (100Mbit only due to switch limitations) , it cannot get an IP address from my DHCP server and offers the option of a "manual" configuration, although this also fails to work.

As stated before, this very same system does not present any such problems under XP.

Intel have a V5.5.4 driver on their support website, however, this is source only and I don't have a working Linux box on which to compile it! Also, Intel do not provide any support for this chipset as it is an OEM product. Nothing on the Asus knowledge-base that helps with this problem at this stage -- the only references to this chipset assume (unhelpfully) that one already has a running Linux installation.

Anyone have any ideas for a workaround or able to compile the drivers for me so that I can do a driver update?

From you problem-description I would conclude that it is more a dhcp client-server problem that a hardware issue.

I did a network installation on a Dell system, using a 82540EM chip together with the e1000 driver. This worked out of the box, however I am using a fixed IP. Since your driver loads without complains, I would expect, it is working. Maybe you could try other methods of connecting to the network (e.g. avoid the switch ?!).

As a follow-up, I didn't get 9.1 to work and bought a copy of 9.2 Pro. This didn't work, either :mad: until I disabled the "PATA" mode on the ICH5R ("Enhanced mode", "SATA" under "IDE configuration" within BIOS/CMOS setup).

Seems to behave, now.
