Suse 9.1 fan going mad

Hi,

I had this problem before and was away for a while, but back now so here it is:

In Windows xp pro, I have no such problem, but in Suse 9.1, my laptop's fan is superloud, even while running a single application ( even with a single console open being idle). I need to program in there, but it is so loud that I get worried about my computer after two hours of listening to this.

I was advised here to reinstall ACPI. I still have installation CDs 3,4,5 (not 1 or 2 though), but now Suse won't open them! Like it wont open any CD since the myComputer icon does not respond. I recently reinstalled Grub after a reinstallation of Win XP had overwrote Suse's path in the MBR. (Now I am also unable to open the three folders I have on the desktop that contain all of the docs I have in Suse (that contain les than 300 MB)). I also downloaded the rpm's from licq, but after I open them I cannot find an install ACPI option under power management (or using the search option).

Thats about it, thanks for any suggestions.

It is a fujitsu siemens notebook with a 1.4 Ghz M processor, 1024 MB ram, 60 GB hddsk. Maybe it is important to emphasize that while using it before the path to the Suse partition was lost, I dont remember having had problems with the fan or with the opening of folders etc.

Could you clarify that part?

Also, does this notebook use ACPI by default or APM?

Yes,

in my first posting I said that I had to reinstall grub because after I reinstalled windows once, the path to Suse got deleted and it stopped offering me to boot it. I only started having problems with the fan after I reinstalled grub. I dont remember having had them before. I have the feeling that a number of things got messed after the windows reinstallation.

I think it is ACPI by default, because when I go into Yast power management it has ACPI options.. I dont know if that clarifies it.

How do I recompile kernel

OK,

so I found in the boot loader configuration, in the MBR code ACPI and APM. I found something online telling you to replace ACPI ON with ACPI OFF so APM starts acting instead. Both of mine were off anyway. I tried turning both on one at a time, and the fan is still working all the time and still verz noisz. Actually problem is not that computer is overheating--it is not too warm but it is very very noisy, so nothing changes.

A friend told me to recompile the kernel with ACPI. How exactlz do I do that?

If someone could give some advice that would be great. Thanks.
