I'm trying to upgrade my 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro on my laptop and keep running into the same problem. It can't read the package info off the DVD. The install went perfect on the desktop, but 4 times now it won't read the package info from the laptop. I have an HP ze5470us with a DVD+R burner in it.
I like 9.0, but definately want 9.1 on the laptop. Anyone have any ideas how to go about this? I'm reasonably new to Linux and would rather avoid a network install. Not sure how to fix it, only want to try something.
Can you boot from the new DVD?
Maybe, there is a prob with the DVD Drive ...
I had a problem with a CDROM version - long time ago.
I fixed it by connecting an external drive. Maybe someone can lend it to you ;-)
Look at the software settings in yast - maybe you have to change the installation source first.
I think you have to enter the new DVD as the software media ...
I had similar problems but it turned out to be my assumptions. I had taken the first DVD and tried booting for an install / upgrade. It got to a point where it notified me that that install was for 64bit systems. I looked closely at the second DVD and around the inside hole it said 32bit so I tried that one only to have it not boot on either side. Someone in a alt.os.linux.suse news group told me the first DVD only needed to be turned over to get to the 32bit bootable installation.
Also check your BIOS, make sure you have the DVD drive set as first in boot order.
The 32-bit side is the one that isn't working right. I installed it fine on my desktop, so I know the disk is good. The 9.0 that is on the laptop currently was installed from a DVD also (I always buy the retail Pro packs) so I know it'll boot from a DVD.
I definately appreciate all of the input from everyone and hope the suggestions keep coming. Even if I try something and it doesn't work, I've learned something and that makes it worth it.
Won't boot from 2nd disk and the CDs are at my Mom's. Won't be back there for a couple weeks, unfortunately. I'm hoping not to have to wait that long, but it looks like I may have to.
if so are you trying to do the upgrade through YaST System Update in your 9.0 installation or are you doing it after booting from the 9.1 DVD?
if your trying to do it through YaST System Update have you changed your Source of Installation to the DVD?
if you could give us a step by step of how your going about updating it may help us see what the problem is.
The one other thing that is a likely cause of the problem is that SuSE 9.0 uses the 2.4 kernel while SuSE 9.1 uses the 2.6 kernel I have heard of problems while trying to do this upgrade due to the kernel changes, in which case it might be easier just to back up your files and do a clean install.
9.0 can mount it. The upgrade is booted DVD. I haven't tried upgrading through YaST yet. I'll have to give that a shot.
I'm going the easy way - boot off of the DVD, choose Install and then Upgrade Existing System. It reads hardware and then tries to read software. It sees what is installed but "Requires user intervention" as it is unable to read the package information.
I'm about ready to try the clean install, but really want this to work.
I had problems with various applications and the operating system itself after upgrading from 9.0 to 9.1. I finally just burned the files I needed to my DVD and started a clean install. Now, the OS and the applications behave nicely and the system is noticeably faster. The only issues I have are: my 2nd CDROM ejecting periodically and an occasional power down problem--won't shut the power off automatically.
I think I'll do that myself. I don't have much other than a few business papers that are also on the server, so nothing really to lose. I can always have fun with reinstalling the toys later.
