I had the problem of low sound quality.
The hint with the digital playback option was superb.

Try this:
Remove the CD from the drive and restart KsCD.
Then you can select a e.g. /media/dvd as a drive and check 'Use direct digital playback'

(SuSe 9.2)

so one could use the cable from the cd to the soundcard or use the ide cable and digital playback. Which one is more economical from the cpu/memory load point of view?

I've seen and used this option before on other distros. For whatever reason..with suse 9.3 and kde 3.4.1 I don't even have this option..

Digital playback is less economical.

Do you know how much less economical? And how about sound quality?

One more thing, is there a way to rip CDs in Linux? I don't disribute them or anything, it's just for personal use.

Hello Kamex,
I'm a Linux openSUSE 9.3 newbie with a KDE desktop and can't receive sound using KsCD, although the KsCD application can read the CD titles as the CD (extension *.cda, not MP3 format) plays on a newly installed Sony (DVD/CD R/RW-800A); the volume is ~87%.
I've been looking for solutions (Post:SuSE 9.3-music Sound Does Not Work introduced on 11/23/05)and am interested in your TotemPlayer option. Internet indicates that TotemPlayer requires the Gnome desktop.
I was wondering if you and other contributors using TotemPlayer have Gnome as the active desktop? Would KDE also work?

Sincerely,
langbein :study:
