suse 10 sp4 fails to install, and now i can't get past the installation menu

Hi experts,

I am trying to install suse10 sp4 on a hp workstation xw6200.

I burned the suse 10 sp4 disk, checked the md5sum for the download and they are correct.

Now when I tried to install it the first time, everything went well , I got past the configurations and everything, and eventually to this point:

That's when it crashed and I had to reboot the system.

I figured no big deal. I would just reinstall. But now when I try to use the installation cd it either tells me to "make sure I got cd 1 in the drive", or from the rescue option telling me "nothing in cd rom is detected" (or something like that --> which is very funny cause the rescue option is launched from teh install cd). booting directly from the hard drive gives an invalid partition table error message.

Which I figured, ok, so if the HD is giving me problems, probably something went wrong during the original install, I will use my ubuntu live cd, format the whole thing, and problem solved! but it didn't. I am still getting the same errors as before.

and even better, I even tried to install ubuntu on this machine and it went through! Well, the graphics is still all messed up, but I think that's because I lack the proper graphics driver. But I can get the console and root previlage and everything.

So, how confused are you guys now?

Thanks
Davy

Well... based on what you posted i'll bet that your Suse disk is damaged, may be it let you run some of the basic booting process but whe it have to read a damaged sector it just fails.
If you need Suse 10 Sp4 i hope you have a disk image or somthing to burn a new cd/dvd if not you may want to install a newer version.

md5?

is there a way to do an md5 checksum on the disk itself? I know how to do it to an iso image.

I don't have a sus disk rigth now, i remeber that some distros have a check installation disk in the boot menu, see if that exist in the disk you are using.

If not you may burn another installation disk and try again

I just tried that, guess what the system gave me: can't find the dvdrom. which is funny cause the verify installation cd option is launched from the disk...

this is the computer trolling me isn't it... :P
