I tried to install Suse 10 on Fujitsu-Siemens ScenicW computer with P IV 2,8GHz HT. After first install CD and reboot- system freezes. I tried several times always the same effect (I checked also the installation CDs at the beginning). Then I thought that maybe it’s because HT is enabled – and after deactivation HT in BIOS everything went well- but I like HT so what I can do? I already downloaded kernel for multiprocessor platform but still the same problem- when I am enabling HT in Bios Suse doesn’t start (freeze at the beginning). I have seen already several posts about Suse 10 freezing after first CD- maybe problem is with HT support? Please help.

Have you installed the SMP kernel while HT is off?

Yes when HT is off, because otherwise I cannot boot (computer is freeze at the start-up).
To be honest I don’t know if I am really installed the SMP i have seen only communicate under Yast that the Multiprocessor kernel is installing.

Sounds like you need to update your bios. Unless you have had HT problems with another OS then I would say you may want to invest in a new processor.Do you have another OS you can load? If so I would try that.I have heard of bad media causing a system to freeze but never had the problem myself.Generally system freezes are hardware failing ex.Memory,Video Card are the 2 main causes of system freezes. Also you may want to try removing anything usb/firewire they are considered hardware also. I had a usb mouse that froze my system up a few weeks back here my cat chewed on the wire.

Ignore my last post I didn't catch you got suse installed.All you have to do to enable HT is go to yast/software management and install kernel-smp and kernel-smp-nongpl and than turn on HT at next boot that should be it.

1. HT is supported by linux kernel
2. install the smp-kernel with rpm -ihv kernel*
3. Check /boot/grub/menu.lst

That should work.

Ok I checked the yast/software management and I have smp-kernel (v2.6.13-15) installed on my computer- but it doesn’t help. Kernel-smp-nogpl is not included in suse 10 distribution so I will try to find it. My PC with HT enabled is working with Win XP professional without problems- so I don’t think that is BIOS problem (anyway I will try to update it).
Any other ideas or hints?

The problem is that ACPI and APIC functions do not work properly with smp kernels (abisko00
thanks for this hint). After disablied ACPI and APIC everything works well with HT enabled
