Suse 10 Install Problems

Hi

I am quite new to linux but decided to take the plunge and move away from windows, it seems to make sense - more secure, cheaper and more options for expansion/upgrades

The only problem I am having is during the install

Everything runs through perfectly until it comes to writing the driver files

it freezes at etc/modprobe.conf

I tried clicking abort - nothing happens, I even left it overnight incase it was just a part of the installation that takes a while but nothing.

Could someone please advise a way around this. The install is going on a Packard Bell Easynote Laptop

I have never heard of a Packard Bell laptop, so I suspect the problem is unsupported hardware.

It might we worthwhile trying to install version 10.3 - as it is much more up-todate than version 10.0

Actually, installing an old Red Hat version (e.g. 7.3) might work better since this sounds like an older laptop.

i would not recomend anthing that old.. its insecure and difficult to work with as you have to do all configing by editing text files.

if suse refuses to install try fedora www.fedora.redhat.com
That tends to install on most hardware ive tried without much trouble.

@ledgejigsaw

What are the specifications of your labtop.
How much memory - while it'll need some memory, just to make the installation.

Which desktop environment did you choose - if you have little memory, you're better off with the XFCE desktop.

I googled the laptop:

PROCESSOR Intel Pentium M 710
MEMORY 512MB DDR SDRAM
HARD DRIVE Fujitsu 40GB
SCREEN SIZE AND TYPE 13.3-inch TFT
DISPLAY RESOLUTION 1280 x 800 pixels
GRAPHICS CARD Intel 855
DIMENSIONS 320 x 224 x 37mm
WEIGHT 2.1kg
PC CARDS (TYPE II/III) 1/0
WIRELESS LAN Intel 802.11g
ETHERNET 10/100

Sounds good for Suse 10.3, or one of the newest releases of any distro.
