SUSE 10 comes on 5 CDs and I would like to download as few as possible for a basic install and then install anything else off FTP or HTTP mirrors.

I downloaded the first one. Is it necessary to download the others as well? How many do you need for a basic install?

Maybe I didn't understand the question, but I booted to the network iso and that was enough to start an ftp upgrade from 9.0 to 10.0.

Options were there for full install too

I got it at:

ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/di.../boot/boot.iso

Whether you d/l the net install image and then do an FTP install, or you first d/l all 5 CD's and install from them locally, the overall amount of data to download in total is basically the same. Six of one, half dozen of another

If this is about limiting the download volume, then JonHayes solution is to be prefered. The boot.iso is about 65MB in size and the FTP installation downloads only what you really decided to install. However if you plan to install the full set (all available packages) , then I agree with J.W.

I'm on the second CD now. I guess I'll download this one and see whether I can do a basic install with the first couple of CDs. Installing by FTP is not really an option because of my slow connection and I don't want an interruption like power cuts during an installation. It would take at least 24-36 hours if I installed it that way and it would be risky to take that route in spite of the UPS that I have. In fact, because of the cyclonic rains here yesterday, we've been having power cuts on and off.

Downloading ISOs seems to be the safer method. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Downloading the ISO's also gives you one other benefit - if the network install fails, you may have to start all over again, and go through the download process a second or third time. With the ISO's in hand, you'll have everything you need locally

You will need all 5 disks to fully install, even on minimal. It uses chunks of each of the disks on install.

Yeah, I just found that out. I suppose I have to continue downloading the remaining CDs. What a waste just to install a measly 35 KB from the last CD!

If you're downloading in Windows; I'd recommend Star Downloader, it cuts files into pieces resulting in faster downloads.

Actually I'm using KGet in Debian... Thanks for the recommendation anyway. In Windows I use Netleech, usually. It's a good download manager.
