SuSE 10 + Eclipse 3.2.1

I watched Xgl from its infancy and liked it. When it matured to the point that a caveman like myself could use it, I picked up a free trial of SuSE 10.

I like it.

However, I've been greping and searching away, and can't find my big killer app: Eclipse 3.2.1 SDK. I work a lot with Eclipse, and like to escape from my X40's 12.1" display to my 20.1" NEC Widescreen when I get home. If anyone could explain to me how to install Eclipse (I can't find it in the "install software" part) I'd really really appreciate it.

Thanks for your time and have a good night!

Hi -

There really is no "install" per se.

Eclipse is really just a big archive (a big "tarball"): you simply extract it to some directory (I prefer "/opt/eclipse"), type "./eclipse" ... and it runs!

You do, however, need to download and install Java first. If you don't already have it (or if you only have Gnu GJC), then get it from Sun:

http://java.sun.com

'Hope that helps .. PSM

Umm...

I was hoping to be able to install it using yast. I perfer to keep things running with the distro's package manager because it ensures that updates get installed.

I've determined that I need to add a entry to the server list for yast, however, I haven't had any luck with that, because yast keeps on yelling at me for trying to give it an invalid source.

The source I tried was ftp://ftp.kernel.org/suse, however, it didn't like that. kernel.org professed to be a "complete" package server, so if it doesn't have Eclipse then I need to build a copy on my Gentoo laptop and merge it onto SuSE's root filesystem.

All right, I've done some more research and become positively confused.

My current list of mirrors is this:

http://www2.ati.com/suse
http://download.nvidia.com/novell
https://update.novell.com/

My machine is an AMD Athlon64 3000+ (I'm pretending it's a workstation) running SuSE 10 Desktop AMD64 (really liking it so far!)

I'd love to get more than just updates, and rather be able to install more software (eg. Eclipse).

I looked through all the stuff in the Yast sources thread, and couldn't find a how-to that I could follow. I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me and suggest a list of valid mirrors or some mirrors that work in the USA - I don't want to burden the trans-atlantic network with my problems too much ; )

Thanks for your time, and have a nice day!

PS: until then I'll be trying variations on update.novell.com to get a working mirror. Wish me luck!

There are two options:

1) Use the suse 10.1. installation sources.

2) Use the SLE10 SDK MEDIA!!! Nobody knows anything about this thing, but its a 4 cd media set which contains IDEs, debuggers, code editors, and other related tools. It supports most major programming languages (including C, C++, Java, and most scripting languages).

check : http://developer.novell.com/wiki/ind...10_SDK_Release

READ this article : Hacking Suse Linux Enterprise

It tells you howto add repositories ( more software) and gives you other hints as well .

For the mirror part check this : http://en.opensuse.org/Mirrors_Released_Version#USA

Wanting to confirm some things in my understanding:

SuSE has no online package servers. They offer updates to the base system only and that's it.

Open SuSE offers more cutting-edge updates, but no packages.

To get new packages, I need to download (and burn?) installation CDs from which SuSE can install junk. **

In order to install junk that's NOT on the installation CDs I need to get the sources and stuff, compile it, and merge it onto my root filesystem in much the same way that Portage does things.

** Can I get out of burning the disks? Could I just download them to hard disk and work with them from there? I really don't want to burn a disk again, since the story of burning the original installation DVD I used went something like this:

three dvds were killed by Sonic Software's cd burner for Windows - it didn't like the disk
the final dvd burned happier than a clam when I used K3B after rebooting into Kubuntu.

I was mad at Windows (again) for claiming the lives of three perfectly good dvds.

Just want to make sure before I install something to disk that I may have to hunt down and uninstall manually (I'm not blessed with lots of disk space - 72 GB WD Raptor SATA150 HDD is nice, but not what I'd call "roomy.")

Hi -

Apologies in advance if this is "old news" (this post is from several days ago) or if you already know this ...

... but Suse should NOT require you to "have the CD" (or burn a DVD)
... yes, you SHOULD be able to download directly from the Internet (as though the Internet were one big install DVD).

Just try this:

1. Go into Yast2
2. Select Software, Installation Source
3. Add as few, or as many, mirrors as you want

Here are two mirrors:
PROTOCOL URL DIRECTORY
------- --- ---------
http suse.cs.utah.edu suse/x86_64/10.0/SUSE-Linux10.0-GM-Extra/
ftp mirrors.usc.edu /pub/linux/distributions/suse/x86_64/10.0/SUSE-Linux10.0-GM-Extra

CAVEAT:
This has always worked for me in the past, on earlier versions of Suse 8.x, 9.x, etc.
I have the Suse 10.x DVD, and the DVD works fine.
When I tried internet downloads on Suse 10, it did *not* work. Yast2 found the sites ... but it still kept wanting to load from the DVD. Perhaps this is the problem you're encountering. Perhaps it's a configuration error on my (our?) part; perhaps it's a policy change on the part of SuSE (now Novell). I frankly don't know :-(

But I hope that helps anyway... At least a little bit...

download eclipse

If your desperate for eclipse, just download it form thier web site. As for the updates use eclipses inbuilt updates or have a look at some of the eclipse cilipso community members web site who offer their own update services. Use those update services to update eclipse sepearte for the yast update. I would not rely on and wait for novel or the opensuse guys to update their eclipse stuff.

I use, easyeclipse to make all the online updateing easy and quick.

Yes,

The above post is correct. If you want to use YaST, just go to http://developer.novell.com/wiki/index.php/SLES_SDK and burn the 4 CD's of the SLED 10 SDK. Then in YaST add a new installation source (CD) and it'll ask you for the first CD to read the catalog then finish up.

Now when you search for Eclipse in the Software Management module, Eclipse will show up. I installed Eclipse, Apache and Tomcat from the SDK cd's and it all went perfectly and is rock-solid! and I work the hellllllll out of it ;-)

Assuming I'm a lazy bum and don't want to burn new CDs all the time... what are my options then? Is there some kind of virtual-cd thing that I could use to mount the .iso images to a virtual drive? Is there a YaST source I can add to get these things? Does it work in Europe? Just kidding on that last one.

Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it! Hopefully I'll be able to code on both my desktop and laptop soon!

I just checked, and all the current Eclipse packages are located in the cutting-edge opensuse Factory repository. See the opensuse site for information and links (I haven't posted enough to offer a direct link). Hope this helps.
