Suse 10

Ok, I have searched these forums and I have been to the Novel website.... Maybe I am just missing something. I planned on buying Suse 10 when it comes out but I can't figure out what commercial packages they will have. Now I know they will probably have java, nvidia drivers and flash, but beyond that will they actually have a working DVD player(to legaly watch movies that I own,) I only want to know what commercial packages they have, lol. I mean if it is only a few that I can install myself (I know this sounds cheap but let me finish,) I can just go with Ubuntu or another free version of Linux and install all I need and then just send the same amount of money to them as a donation.

And yes I already called Suse to see if they could help me find a store. Well they couldn't and they didn't seem all that helpful.... I wonder if they are that sure of their version of Linux that they don't feel they need go out of their way to help a perspective customer or maybe they are just that unorganized.... Which either way is not all that comforting if I am buying their product. Anyways.......

Any links at Novel I missed or threads here that list the commercial packages? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: If I can't find out what I need to know I may just do that anyways. I am trying to show off Linux to family and friends, they have been with MS all their life and just want a user friendly OS. If they see I bought one, look at it, use it on my computer and feel comfortable with it then maybe they will go out and buy one for themselves. If not Suse then maybe I'll try Xandros or Linspire instead? Yes I am frustrated, can you tell, LOL.

I think it will be no for encrypted DVDs, and hopefully yes for MP3 support, but package lists haven't been confirmed yet. In the longer term openSUSE aim to provide all of these features by hosting in various countries around the world to avoid legal issues. In the meantime you could of course just download openSUSE - which will be identical to the boxed version - from www.opensuse.org for free on the 6th of October and try it out. If it does do what you want and you want to support Novell you could then buy it later.

Thanks. I think I might do that. I have been looking into Mandriva, Linspire and Xandros as well as Suse. It seems like most of what they all offer is already free. So then it comes down to who I would rather support. Suse is top on the list of that group, of course Mandriva was not that long ago to, lol. I want to show people the ease of some linux distro's so they are not so gun shy about switching from MS. I did notice that Linspire offered a dvd player that would play commercial dvd's for a price. I wonder if there are any other DVD players for Linux that I could buy???

Ok. I have had it with Suse. I have tried calling, with no luck. So I tried emailing them and this is what I got:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Customer:

This e-mail address has been cancelled due to the excessive amount of incoming
spam.

You can contact us via:

http://www.suse.de/en/company/suse/contact/index.html
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now this IS how I have tried contacting them. So as of now I no longer wish to deal with them. I wonder why it is so hard to talk with or communicate with anyone there. Well at least I have a few other linux options, glad I didn't just buy it.

Oh, and by the way I recieved this email a few minutes after I sent it to them from THEIR own website not my email account. I also gave them my isp email, not a gmail, yahoo or free email account, oh well time to try the Linspire live cd.

LQ Admins, sorry for wasting forum space with this thread. You can delete it if you like.
