Question Suse 10.2 - Dualboot question

I have installed suse 10.2.

I have Windows XP on my primary IDE HD.

I installed Suse 10.2 onto one of my SATA drives. But selected to install GRUB on the MBR of the primary IDE HD.

Now when I boot up I do not have the option to load XP, I just see Suse options.

A repair of the XP MBR will get rid of the GRUB and I will probably have to install Suse again.

Is there anyway I can boot XP from the primary IDE HD with GRUB and have the option to boot Suse from the SATA drive?

"Fixing" the MBR from windows was a bad idea - it is easily fixed from SUSE.

You need to install grub to MBR of the windows drive again, boot into SUSE and check the /boot/grub/menu.lst file ... you will probably need to add an entry for windows in there (use a text editor).

Thanks for your reply. I did not 'fix' the MBR with XP. What do I need to enter into menu.lst?

First make sure which partition XP is on. If is an OEM install, it may be on the second partition.

This is the entry for Windows from my dual boot XP/Suse 10.2 laptop:
Code:
title Windows
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    chainloader (hd0,1)+1
The OEM install has a recovery partition, so the MBR is on the root of the disc (hd0, 0), but the XP partition is on the second partition (hd0,1).

There's a good GRUB wiki here.

Do we need a sticky for this problem? It seems to come up at least once a week.

Would it help? Nobody searches for the answer before they post their question. I doubt that having this question set permanently at the top of the question list would reduce the number of people who will still post it again and again and again, just like the ATI graphic card problems.

I'll echo stress_junkie here. It is the sort of thing people have trouble with when they are so new they don't get the way forums work yet.

The main advantage of a sticky would be to provide an easy link for the replies to point to. A bit like the fedora subforum nvidia/ati sticky does.
