SUSE 10.1, wireless network adapter appears to be undetected.How to fix this?
 

hi everyone,
I just installed suse10.1 on my laptop a month ago, I did not use it much. but when i try the wireless internet connection, it appears that the wireless adapter is inactive after booting. My laptop (HP dv1000) comes with a len indicating wireless's activity, and a button to turn it on and off. In linux, that button becomes ineffective. I guess the network adapter is not detected by Suse at all (it is Intel's PRO/Wireless 3945ABG, a very common one).
How to make the wireless network card running properly?

In SuSE, open up YaST.

Go to "Hardware" on the left menu, click on Hardware Information. Wait. When the window opens, click on the + next to Network Card, and see if it's there. If so, you're in luck. Close that window, click on Network Devices at the left, click on Network Card, select the one you want, click Edit, and make sure it's setup correctly.

There is a possibility (a somewhat good chance) that your wireless card is not supported by Linux or by SuSE.

Do you have the exact model, or chipset, of the network card?

it will be installed, i have the exact same network card. But with suse 10.1 you need to install a daemon to get it to work.

I don't have the link to the file right now, but to be honest if i was you i wouldn't bother. Just install suse 10.2 because that will detect and fire up your wireless card automatically as default :)

EDIT: incidently you choose the perfect distro because suse is the only linux that intel wrote drivers for, for that card. Same goes for the standard intel graphics and sound chipset you usually get along with it :)

I found the exact model under Hardware Info -> Network card. And I went through the Network card configuration steps, under EDIT, but there is not anything to change(everything remains its default value). isn't it odd?

However, I would like to stick with 10.1 for a while, rather than upgrading it to 10.2(maybe to 10.3 after awhile). Do you still remember more specifics about fixing this problem in 10.1, i.e. how to find the *patch*, installation, etc? Thanks..

Do what the guy second post down says. install that rpm restart and it will work, but like i said with 10.2 you don't need too becuase it works as default and 10.2's a lot better than 10.1 you get the cool new start menu apart form anything else! :p

problem solved. thank you all.
The problem was that, by default Suse 10.1 does not install the driver ipw3945d....rpm intended for the Intel pro/wireless 3945 adapter. But, fortunately this driver is available on the various installation sources: dvd, cd's, online repository. I simply installed it using Yast and reboot my PC. Now, the wireless adapter is running. :)

suse 10.2 did not work?

Can anyone please advise to how I can get it to work.. this is very frustrating!
