Suse 10.1: Preload or Prelink? Preloading looks like not working

I've recently moved to SUSE 10.1 fresh install (I was using 9.3).
What is the feature (preload or prelink) that preloads OpenOffice, Firefox etc so as to make them launch quicker? I see the preload files in /etc/preload.d but I could not find any prelink package in the DVD I have burnt (complete DVD).

I'm asking this cause the preload or prelink effect looks like not working. When booting or shutting down I don't see any message regarding the preload. Also, I don't see any change in launch speed from my previous installation Suse9.3 nor in the RAM memory occupancy.

Is there a log that shows the preload activity?

RAM=512MB and CPU=1.8GHz P4.

Thanks!!

Ronald

The preload feature was added in 10.0. Suse currently does that for my two 10.0 boxes I have running.

As for a log, it usually happens on shutdown for me in 10.0. You may want to check out /var/log/messages.

hope this helps :)

Hi,

I went through the logs, but there is no register about the preload activity. I think the preloading is not working on my Suse 10.1, although I select the standard installation. The package "preload" is installed:

>rpm -qa |grep preload
preload-0.2-25

Does anybody know what else could I check to try to find the issue?

Thank you!

This preload thingy that was always executed during shutdown in 10.0 has been moved to cron.daily, that is it is only executed once a day. Have a look at /etc/cron.daily.
