SuSE 10.1 network manager keeps prompting me for wireless SSIDs

There are a number of wireless networks I would like to connect to: 2 at work, one at home. All are encrypted with 64-bit or better SSIDs.

The Suse 10.1 wireless network manager is able to detect those networks with visible SSIDs no problem (I originally hid my home SSID, but this connection was not even recognized as one with a hidden SSID by the NM, so I made it visible; I can live with keeping it visible if it simplifies the hassle connecting). The problem is that every time I try to make a connection to one of the networks, it keeps prompting me for the relevant SSID.

I guess the manager does have support for the saving of SSIDs, as this to me is an obvious feature. It's just that it doesn't seem to work for my machine. Any ideas?

I'm running SuSe 10.1 from an ASUS A8J laptop. The account I am normally using is not root (but that shouldn't matter, right?).

By the way, I also have a related network problem - my wired network doesn't work with the NM at all, which is inconvenient. But I'll raise that as a topic of a separate thread.

i am not having problems with my wireless network, but i am with my wired.... wireless=rt2500, wired=tulip driver. i have tried using networkmanager, but prefer if scripts.

the thing is, my network works perfectly in fedora, on my other partitions. (i have also tried dhcp or static ip, and reinstalled 2x already...no luck on getting it working....)

one thing though....the wired network works for like 30s right when it is enabled..... wtf?

any ideas?? thx

Ok, I found some related information that might help me but I'm still stuck. Apparently from the following info about KNetworkManager, I'm supposed to enable KWallet:

http://en.opensuse.org/Projects/KNet...r#Wireless_LAN

Problem is, it doesn't seem to exist on my Suse10.1 installation, and I tried searching for the RPM under YaST with still no luck!

Any ideas?

Someone else seems to have a related problem:

Ok, fixed the problem.

I couldn't find kwallet under YaST as it was bundled in another package called kdeutils3:

http://www.novell.com/products/linux...kdeutils3.html

and it turns out it was already installed. It just didn't appear on my desktop tray.

It appears on my tray if I typed from a shell:

> kwalletmanager

after that, it was a simple matter of following the instructions under

http://en.opensuse.org/Projects/KNet...r#Wireless_LAN

namely

* Right click wall icon in tray
* Select "Configure Wallet"
* Check "Enable the KDE wallet subsystem" on the tab "Wallet Preferences"

if you disconnected/reconnected your network connection with SSID, kwallet would kick in and prompt you for a password, and subsequently save your SSIDs. Then any subsequent reconnection will be automatic.

With kwallet I get the following:
Quote:

There have been repeated failed attempts to gain access to a wallet. An application may be misbehaving.
And it forces me to type the encryption keys every time.
Even on a brand new suse 10.1 installation.

Nvm last post --- I deleted the config files and it worked properly.

I found similar problems occasionally when the network manager tries to make a connection during start-up and prompts me for the kwallet password. If I don't respond in time, the kwallet closes and the network manager gets itself confused even if you try re-opening the wallet. What I do is re-start the machine and fill in the kwallet password asap.

I'm hoping that SuSE 10.2 solves all these annoyances.
