Currently using Suse 10.1 (and KDE 3.5.1) and one of the nice features is good support for plugging in and and out of usb drive devices. IN the last few days this has stopped working and various messages suggest that I am no longer loading or intialising HAL and Dbus on boot-up. No idea why, but I know these packages are installed on my system. Can anyone advise where the startup script is that I need to fix to make sure these utilities are up and running.
From a console, run 'dmesg | less'. Watch for errors relating to HAL and Dbus. After that, inspect the contents of /var/log/messages. You may find useful information to help solve the problem.
Thanks for the hints regarding where to look. I've had a quick look and nothing obvious in the dmesg messages, some possible hints in the /var/log/messages. Generally very useful to know about these listings, even if it does not solve my immediate problem. Is there documentation which explains what writes to these files under what circumstances? Thanks.
