suse 10.1 can't mount vivitar camera
I have a Vivitar 3740 camera which I would like to use with Suse 10.1.
My computer dual boots with XP & 10.1. The camera works OK with XP but not with 10.1. I've tried with Knoppix which gives error - could not mount device, could not determine the file system type & none was specified. It shows as /media/sda1. With 10.1 this is lsusb, Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0461:0828 Primax Electronics, Ltd Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 This is dmesg, Epsilon32:/home/brian # dmesg | tail Additional sense: Unrecovered read error end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 121330 sd 3:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x8000002 sda: Current: sense key: Medium Error Additional sense: Unrecovered read error end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 121331 sd 3:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x8000002 sda: Current: sense key: Medium Error Additional sense: Unrecovered read error end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 121332 This is lspci, Epsilon32:/home/brian # lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661FX/M661FX/M661MX Host ( rev 11) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS AGP Port (virtual PCI-t o-PCI bridge) 00:02.0 ISA bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS964 [MuTIOL Media IO] (r ev 36) 00:02.5 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 5513 [IDE] (rev 01) 00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] AC'97 Soun d Controller (rev a0) 00:03.0 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f) 00:03.1 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f) 00:03.2 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f) 00:03.3 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 2.0 Controller 00:04.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 PCI Fast Et hernet (rev 91) 00:05.0 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] RAID bus controller 180 SATA/PATA [SiS] (rev 01) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760/ 761 PCI/AGP VGA Display Adapter Although the camera works OK with XP, my prefered OS is Linux, I wonder if anyone has a solution ? br14n. |
Can you access the flash file system at all?
It (SUSE) may not recognize your exact camera model per se but if you can still access your images as you would a regular flash drive then you should be okay just using it as /media/sda1. At least that's been my story with my Olympus S-series... |
if you camera uses a memory card such as SD or XD my suggetion would be to buy a cheap USB card reader anmd use that instead... tahts what i use and i have never had any problems, then again my camera mounts corectly usially anyway (samsung digimax A6)

Tnx for your suggestions, Robb & dasy, I can access a flash drive OK but the camera does not show up at all except for lsusb. It all works perfectly for MS,
so I'll pursue this further, Brian. |
I've solved the problem at last, the solution is to install Picasa2 from Google and everything just works, marvellous !! Unfortunately I didn't discover this until I'd bought a new camera!
