Suse 10.1 Alpha
http://www.opensuse.org/Roadmap
For another few days, alpha 2 will be relesed, i may try it on a blank hard drive. :D |
I'm satisfied with suse10gm . Ill start testing 10.1 when it hits beta in January.
Things what im really waiting for are: kernel 2.6.14 with ipw2200 (aka centrino) wlan drivers support and some kind of program to use different wlan-networks easily kde 3.5 or maybe even the new kde 4.0 OpenOffice 2.0 final Tiger, i dont know if you have seen this page before, but you should check it out before downloading. And here is the official announcement
Alpha2: * APT successor SMART is provided in the smart rpm package. It can be used like apt-get using apt or YUM package repositories (all inst-source directories contain YUM meta data) * Update to KDE 3.5 Beta 2 * Update to Gnome 2.11.1 * Update to OpenOffice.org 2.0 RC 3 |
i dare not try it.
|
Please report us what you think of it .
|
there is no support of it,
if i use suse 10.0, i can easily get online update and patches. alpha is unstable, it may cause my system crash or behave weird. i had better shun it. |
I was very dissapointed with alpha 2. I was currently using suse 9.3 before trying alpha 2. I know your not supposed to use the beta versions for a productions system but i had to try it. It had a lack of hardware detection it wouldnt even detect my common built in sound card.
So ill just stick with 9.3 |
sparton:
this behaviour is a known bug in 10.1alpha2 Package yast2-hardware-detection is not installed by default. Select it manually in the package selection. Otherwise yast will not be able to configure your hardware. |
9.3 is termed professional, i think it is great!
use it instead of alpha. |

KDE 3.4 was driving me nuts. Should have called it the "Revenge of the Spinning Hourglass" release. :o SuSE 10.1 Alpha 4 is running perfectly here though, on my Toshiba laptop no less. Only complaint is they seem to have broken the excellent madwifi/atheros support I enjoyed in 9.3 Pro. :(
|
BTW, apparently madwifi requires the non-gpl version of suse's kernel. All the other packages needed were otherwise on the 10.1 discs. Only problem appears to be there's no automatic hardware detection for atheros wifi anymore. So I had to add the module name ath_pci to the variable $MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT in the file /etc/sysconfig/kernel (which is read by the init script /etc/rc.d/boot.loadmodules) and that solved the recognition problem. KInternet still needed to be installed and Yast had to be run to configure all the network interfaces... but that's all "normal" stuff. ;)
As a side note, after swithcing to the non-gpl'd kernel I got the smartlink-softmodem drivers working with my Toshiba lappy too, so all three network interaces (ath0, eth0, modem0) are now fully functional! Yippe!! :D |
now is beta 3
