SUSE 10.0 random freezes usual solutions didn't work
Hi,
I'm freshmeat to linux and so far it hasn't given me good news....
I recently installed Suse 10.0 32bit (i586 it tells me) and I've been having random freezes that occur anywhere from boot into KDE to half an hour time. This mostly happens when I'm trying to open something (anything) or just nothing.....and freeze.
I've read this forum alot of it seemed alot of people had the same issues, and most of the people worked out it was bad ram modules. Despite the fact memtest86 reported OK to all tests (after a 10hour test..) I bought a new DDR2 ram stick anyway (1gb), and the problem still persisted.
Also sometimes in linux I'd be able to go on the internet, and other times I boot, I can't get on the internet. At first i thought suse only froze when I could go online cause when I couldnt, suse wouldnt freeze.....and not long ago....it did, guess I just got lucky the other times. I bought a new ethernet card to see if it helped, it didnt.
I even tried unplugging and replugging in the data cables on my HDD's, nothing.
please help :/
System config:
Intel P4 3.0ghz (temp. is around 39-42 celcius)
2gb ddr2 samsung 533
w.d 200gb ide 7200rpm ntfs (winxp)
w.d 80g ide 7200rpm (linux....whatever partition it made itself)
* Dual booting with LILO
256mb ddr3 Nvidia Geforce 6800GS PCI-E (Drivers updated thru YOU during install.)
SMC 1244TX Ethernet (linux detected it as something else, Accton i believe.)
16x Pioneer DVD-RW
Kernel is 2.6.13
Connected over LAN to internet. Modem on server is a Motorola Surfboard modem (if that matters.)
sry i tried to be specific as i can anything else lemme know.
Have you checked the log-files? Maybe you find some hints in /var/log/messages /var/log/warn or dmesg. You could try to run your system with ACPI disabled (boot with acpi=off or set this parameter in lilo.conf).
1) are you using nvidia drivers?
2) is mouse "working" (you can move mouse cursor, but nothing will respond to mouse clicks) and everything including keyboars is dead?
I had similar problems when I had SuSE 9.3. Random freezes that lock the keyboard, I remember that I could move the mouse but nothing more. I had to do every time a hard reset. This problem was caused by the "nv" driver used in the X Window System configuration. I have a GeForce MX440 graphic card in that system. Once I installed the "nvidia" driver, this problem disappeared.
Also, if you install the "nidia" driver through YOU, you should be careful, sometimes it ends without any warnings but still you don't have it installed. Check if you are using the "nvidia" driver, type:

This is little off the original question, but sometimes when the keyboard doesn't seem to respond there is another solution to a brutal reset.
This guy explains it better than I can http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/in...=14&t=503&st=1
The other solution is to access from another machine. The skinny elephant trick has worked for me when Azureus was causing lockups. This is supposedly more gentle than hitting the reset.
My geforce seems to be fine, no issues with the graphics.
I've tried swapping the RAM around, putting in a 1gb stick at a time, no luck. When my system locks up it completely locks up, mouse and keyboard.
I eventually got linux to run with acpi=off.....and it seems to have stopped the freezing (I hope). I've now lasted 2 hours in suse without freeze. (longest ever....last record 1/2 hour)
