I don't know if this is distro-specific or not, but here goes...
I have Suse 9.2 and a C-Media L-8738-6C sound card.
This computer is set up with five user accounts, one for each member of the family. The sound works for Root and for the first user who logs in after booting up. But if you do a "switch user," leaving the first user logged in, the second user can't get sound. This includes not playing audio files, no sound for movie files, won't play CDs, and K3B won't give access to burn CDs for the second user.
Is there a fix for this, so that everyone can have sound?
I'm not sure exactly how SuSE operates, but in Fedora, there's a file (/etc/security/console.perms) which allows access to various devices for the user who logs in first (hence the 'console' in console.perms).
You can most probably get round this by doing 'chmod 666' for each device you want everyone to have access to.

Thanks for the suggestion; it half-solves the problem. I went to /dev and did chmod for each device that has audio, cd or dvd in its name (I have both a cd and a dvd burner). Now the cd and dvd burners are good. The sound's still not there for anyone after the first user, though.
