Sound a bit too quiet

I have found using vlc, realplayer or anything else really the sound works ok but it is very quiet.

My sound card is detected as:-

82801G(ICH7 Family)High Definition Audio Controller

Basically a fairly standard integrated intel chipset in a laptop (Toshiba L100).

Now i have checked in Yast and Alsamixer etc and all say it is set to max volume but its still quiet!

I know the sound on these laptops isn't fantastic even in windows XP but its on dual boot and its definatly a lot louder in XP.

So anyone got any ideas?

well in alsamixer there are only 2 channels to adjust volumes on, and like i said both are set to max. Do you think maybe its the driver? Like its just not that good? Or maybe theres a newer version?

I know on my Gentoo box my sound sounded crackly or echoed and I had to turn on to almost max and one to about half way. I would play with those options a little more and if it still doesn't work you could try a different driver. There is a good possibility the hardware detection just put in the default driver for the distribution and the chipset took it, mind you there still may be better drivers out there for it. Did you do a default install from the CD? or did you configure the kernel yourself to fit your driver needs ?

You can also try re-installing your ALSA drivers

Here is a good walk through: http://www.gidnetwork.com/b-106.html

NOTE: You may want to back your current Kernel version and try this on a test kernel incase it messed up the sound you already have. I have seen lots of reports that Sues 10.1 had some issues with that chipset.
