my suse 10.1 used to boot up fine. maybe about a minute or so after turning on the pc, it will be on the desktop. but after a while, it took a while to load into the root desktop. not thinking much of it, i used my user desktop. but now, it seems my user desktop is loading slow too. it will go to the splash screen of suse and have the window manager thing on it. then it will just sit for 5 minutes loading. after a while, the desktop would show up. i havnt changed my startup services and havnt installed much that would really effect startup time. failsafe gnome still starts up right away. hopefully, someone can help me with this. thanks in advanced

Suse 10.1 dropped support form my wireless network card. No sweat, there was a hardwired NIC back to the router so I switched to that. But booting took forever. The log jam turned out to be the unrecognised wireless card. Once I removed it from its PCI slot performance was back.

But I'm still pissed that they removed support for the wireless card. It was because of the support that I went to Suse 10.0.

PS everyone says its easy setting up the card from alternative sources. Yeah, right!

hmm, i dont think its a problem with my network as i havnt done anything with it. The bootup time just suddenly slowed down by itself. maybe ill try reinstalling suse...

Have you tried to observe the sequence of events as the PC boots to see if you can identify the problem area? You probably already know that you can do this by pressing ESC when boot starts?

Generally if there are one or more slow events or even time outs they become apparent.

oh, this isnt when its booting up the pc. this is when im logging into my account. both root and my user account. so this is after i have booted up and right after i type in my username and password.

Not from me, I'm afraid- I am so frustrated by Yast2's inability to update from servers and my lack of intuity and smarts to configure an alternative package manager that for the first time since Suse 9.0 I'm looking for an alternative distro.

Which raises a question about software in general - how can they call it an update when they always seem to break something else?
