Skype and the Uconnect 901 under Suse Linux 10.0
 

For anyone interested, here's a setup guide to get the VoIPvoice Uconnect 901 sound functions to work using Suse Linux 10.0. If you're not sure what the VoIPvoice Uconnect 901 is check out the link below.

First off, here is what I have installed on my system.

Kernel realease 2.6.13-15
ALSA 1.0.10 from Packman
Skype 1.0.2.18
skype_dsp_hijacker v0.6

Now here are the steps.

1. Set the Uconnect 901 to the USB only setting.

2. Plug in your Uconnect.

3. Suse 10.0 takes care of loading the drivers automatically. The drivers that are loaded for use are snd-usb-audio.

4. Look for snd-usb-audio in the system logs to see if any errors occurred.

5. If no errors occurred, check to see if Yast is able to detect the Uconnect. Go to Yast > Hardware > Sound. You should see "VoIPvoice USB Phone."

6. In my case, Yast didn't detect the Uconnect. I had to manually add some entries in the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file and /etc/modprobe.d/sound.YaST2save file. If this happens to you as well, add these entries.

options snd-usb-audio enable=1 index=n
alias snd-card-n snd-usb-audio

n needs to be replaced with a number. The number to use varies depending upon how many sound devices are installed. For example, if you have two sound devices, you will need to use "2" in place of the "n."

7. After adding these entries, Yast will detect the Uconnect as VoIPvoice USB Phone. Now you will be able to manage the Uconnect using Yast.

8. Exit out of Yast and open up kmix and check to see if the Uconnect shows up in you Current Mixer drop-down box.

9. Using kmix, under the Switches tab, make sure that the Speaker setting is checked.

Now the Uconnect's sound functions are installed on your machine. To test your Uconnect, open up Skype, go to Tools, select Options, and select Hand/Headsets. For the Calls dropdown box, select the last entry you can choose. It should be something like /dev/dspn. Place a call in Skype and then press Talk on your phone. The sound quality depends on your network connection. If you're using broadband, the sound quality should be crystal clear both sending and receiving.

Right now I can't figure out how to make the phone ring, display caller ID, and dial out. I think however this is a software issue since under Windows, the VoIPvoice software needs to be installed and integrated in Skype for these features to work.
