I am very happy with my "perfect OS" (ref Jem Report) of Suse 10.1. Should I upgrade to 10.2 to even get greater perfection?

Well, I'll chime in with a resounding YES. It seems faster than 10.1, especially Yast. I had some video issues with my widescreen laptop, but with the forums help, got it resolved and now it runs like a champ. I upgraded all 3 computers in the house from 10.1 to 10.2.

Yep, 10.2 is much better than 10.1.

If it isn't broken, dont fix.

Suse 10.2 is a really good OS.
If you're updating from 10.1->10.2 I recommend a fresh install.

I usually follow the same rule as onjoo said - don't fix something that works. If 10.1 is a perfect os for you, than maybe wait for 10.3? Unless you've got some free time. I'm using 10.0 atm, but will switch to 10.2 once I finish all projects for this semester. Reason: broken buildservice repos for 10.0

Maybe my question should have been "should I ever upgrade from 10.1 to 10.x".

I can surely wait for 10.3 but I still don't know. I was actually running 10.1_64 and tried Compiz. It toasted my CPU (Athlon 64)so I set up a work box (non-64 Athlon CPU) and a play box (a new Athlon 64). I did a fresh install of 10.1_586 for the work box but had a few problems getting everything the way I like it and it slowed up work for a too long. Now it works and I'm OK to upgrade (if worth it) but think there might be SMART changes required(?) which once caused me hastles by switching to the factory release - something I unfortunately don't have time for.

I still have issues with my playbox and have finally established that the CPU toasting also cooked the mobo a little so it works but whenever I try to load a 64 bit distro (SuSe, Mandriva, Fedora, Sabayon) the video hangs. I just bought a new GeForce 7600 and it didn't fix it. My playbox otherwise works OK with WindozeXP Pro but I can't get a Linux dostro to reboot after install without my video being blank and frozen. So I'm looking for a good (not too expensive) socket 939 mobo.

Back to the workbox - I guess what I want to hear is that upgrading to 10.2 is easy, just boot and say upgrade and everything will smoothly upgrade to a better release. Is that possible or an I deaming?

Sorry for the offtopic, but how the hell did that happen? I mean how this to things are related?

I did this from 10.0. I put the 10.2 DVD in my drive and rebooted the computer. When it fired up I chose 'Installation' and then later on chose 'Upgrade'.

It worked fine. The only oddity was that Amarok no longer worked as my user name was not listed as a member of the 'audio' group! I had to reconfigure ndiswrapper too to get my network cardworking. This took about two minutes

I highly suggest you do a fresh install of suse 10.2. Its just a rule of thumb for me. Its nice to start clean. Anyways some of the changes that were most important for me:

• Network manager now plays nice with ndiswrapper.
• Getting beryl and xgl working is stupidly easy with 10.2
• Yast software management now works flawlessly. Yast in general is faster
• Gnome shortcut menus can be edited! Also the gnome file permissions menu is better.

Some flaws:

• SaX can't configure my LCD screen properly as compared to 10.1. The lower resolutions will cause my monitor to give me an overscan message. But after a quick manual edit of xorg.conf (changed hertz rate) it works good.
• wlan0 gets renamed eth0, but after editing '/etc/udev/rules.d/30-net_persistent_names.rules' and commenting out the rule that has 'eth0' in it, everything worked fine.

So I say, go ahead and make the jump!

I am running 10.1(64) and I have ATI video card and I could not make Compiz work.
Now I am waiting for for 10.2 from Novell, as soon as I get it I will do a fresh install and I will try Compiz before I spend any time with config.

Any tips with the beryl/xgl installation?

This article has some great tips on how to setup Beryl with XGL or AIGLX. I suggest you use Beryl since it has way more features and is easier to configure. But if you insist on using compiz, the Beryl manager makes it easy to switch to compiz. The manager is basically a small applet that sits in your tray that allows you to switch between compositing managers easily.

Also note that since you have an ATI card and are thinking of switching to suse 10.2, Beryl/XGL works best with the new drivers that support Xorg 7.2.

Actually ATIs driver supports Suses Xorg 7.2rc2 . The final one hasn't been released yet.

But if using Suse 10.2 there are no problems at the moment. Beryl is easy to setup and working great. Beryl seems to be a bit more unstable than compiz at the moment, but I recommend using it if you want that eyecandy, coz the configuration tools help you to adjust it just the way you want it

Yes my bad, Xorg 7.2rc2. I saw the pre-release version warning in my xorg.log. Its pretty stable so props to Suse.

I don't use mythtv, but for video playback, I've heard some people get weird distortions in their video when using xgl and compiz. Whenever I use xgl and beryl I sometimes get this green line running through my video, which is weird. I also found that video playback slows down but that's because I am leaning on the dangerous side and running beryl on a P3 600Mhz with 256 MB of ram and a Geforce 4 Ti. Someday its going to print NO in my boot logs and burst into flame. Your comp, if recent, should be able to handle it just fine though.

Upgrade? Yes! I found 10.0 stable as a rock and am still running it on this machine. I tried 10.1 and 10.1 Remastered on other machines and ran into lots of problems with both. 10.2 is again solid as a rock like 10.0 but faster and you can leave the Zen Updater function off completely if you like which really helps Yast. 10.2 also gives you more feedback when it is updating so you're not left wondering and waiting. BTW, I always do a clean install. I'm now installing Mythtv 2.0 on 10.2 using Packman RPMs and that is also looking very good so far. Mythtv works well but I'm currently chasing down a proper lircd.conf file for my remote.
