I am new to OpenSuse. I have worked on debian based systems up to now.

I have following questions.

1. Is it possible to setup a Yast Installation server with OpenSuse, I mean without purchasing/installing Enterprise stuff ?

2. If yes, how ?

2. I'm assuming you want to use your server for installation/update source. Set up the repository in a public (for your network) directory, something like /srv/www/vhosts/fqdn/suse/11.0/ Seed it, or not, with files off the DVD. Then set up a cron using wget to check with an openSUSE repo every so often. man wget will give you the switches you will need and I'm sure if you search the openSUSE site they will probably have most of the particulars.

I am talking about the following scenario. We have some production servers, currently running RedHat. They are not directly connected to repos via Internet. We are upgrading them periodically manually. We want to setup a server which is directly connected to the Yast repositories (Internet) , then we want our production server to only connect to this "Yast Installaion Server" and install/upgrade all the packages.

Such a solution with Redhat is only available with Enterprise edition.
[EDIT]: This functionality of setting up custom repositories is freely available with Debian, but due to some weird company policy, we are not allowed to use Debian.

But the how-to still mentions Enterprise server 9 or something. I wanted to know if this particular functionality is available with OpenSuse (without Enterprise stuff) or not. If not, then what will be the other alternatives to this.

Yes it is available with openSUSE. I have around 60 openSUSE and ten Ubuntu servers using one local server as an install/update repo. All you have to do is point the install/update source on the client machines to the repo server.
