Question Setting Startup Environment Variables

I have downloaded the latest version of Java EE, and it has been installed successfully on my OpenSUSE 10.1 computer (I haven't installed the java JDK version that came with the distro), but when I try to install NetBeans, it tells me that there is no JVM installed, and this is due to the environment variables JAVA_HOME, JRE_HOME, etc., which point to a different directory from where my JDK was currently installed.

How can I change the value of these variables, and make this change to be permanent, as in every time I boot these variables will take the proper values.
