I have OpenSuse11.1 installed with KDE3.5 Desktop.
I have configured the internet access through DSL router, and use Kinternet to connect to the internet.
I can ping the ISP DNS servers through konsole, as well as access any website only through Konqueror.
I am unable to access the internet either through Firefox. Even the YAST online update fails hile accessing the repositories.
Please help, why the internet network is available through select applications and not through all the installed applications.
Distribution: Mandriva 2009 X86_64 suse 11.3 X86_64 Centos X86_64 Debian X86_64 Linux MInt 86_64 OS X

Why kinternet and not the network manager ?
Assuming that you're dsl router is connected to you're PC using a etehernet.
Or has you to dial up to get a DSL connection ?

some items , like you're provider , account name , password
You can reach you're router by typing the IP adress of the router in a web browser and than you can fill in the items mentioned above
When I still use a dial modem I use kinternet.
But you can not use network manager and kinternet at the same time .
You have to make a choice
Some people said it is wish to protect you;re router with a password
But if you do so do not forget that password , because if you forget it
you never can reach it again
But once connected, why only selected applications are able to access the internet.
Why is it that Konqueror can access the internet but firefox or even Yast update modules are unable to access the internet.
Does it means that only KDE applications can be used to access the internet?

If the internet connection is correct yast and firefox can access the internet.
Thinking of firefox is it by accident set on the off line mode ?
See option File option Work off line is it blank or not if it is not blank than it is set as working off line ?
About Yast do you configure the online update ?
Which repositories is configured to be used in you're system ?

Is there any particular configuration, due to which I am unable to access internet outside KDE. I am also able to ping
the sites using *Konsole*.
What do you mean by outside KDE ?
Second check you firewall settings
OR stop you're firewall of opensuse and router and see if you can go on the internet using firefox and yast

Yes, it proved to be a firewall issue. It worked after disabling the firewall completely.
Thanks for your help.
Don't simply leave the firewall disabled. Determine what problems your firewall settings are creating. Run the YaST Firewall2 wizard. My guess is that it has something to do with DHCP, if that is used. You may not be getting the name server settings from your Routers DHCP server (or your IPs DHCP server). Or your DHCP client isn't updating it. If you can access the internet using IP addresses but not domain names, it is probably a DNS issue.
If dhcp isn't used, then you manually need to configure what the nameserver (dns) ip address are. I would recomment using opendns.
Another thing to look at is if web access goes through your ISPs proxy server. Each browser, konqueror, firefox, etc. have their own proxy settings. This could cause konqueror to work and firefox to fail.

Yes, it was also the DNS issue. Firefox is unable to resolve the DNS. However, after running the Firewall wizard, it works sometimes, but stops working after a reboot. It works when I get the IP address using through some other methods, using nslookup on another box and using the IP address to access the URL in Firefox.
My ISP uses DHCP. There is no proxy server involved.
I tried reinstalling the box and switched to GNOME from KDE3.5. Similar problem was observed there too. The problem was not observed when using a KDE4 desktop.
However, I have moved to Fedora, and everything seems to be working normally.
