Screensavers

I have this weird problem with opensuse 10.2 and kde 3.5. I select an open gl screensaver and test it and everything is fine. However when I save my changes and wait for the screensaver to pop up only blank screen appears. I am using ati radeon x300 pce and I have 3d acceleration enabled. Does anyone have this problem? Is there any log file that I could check out? Many thanks.

Seen it before but never really tried to figure it out completely. It has something to do with permissions I believe. CHeck this post out for help. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...69#post1520669

Also I have seen one adding the /usr/bin/Xscreensaver command to the wheel group. Lower down in the post it talks about changing ownership and groupship of the command.

Give those a try.

Have you checked into your powersave functions? I think it is just turning off the screen instead of starting the screensaver. I had the same problem with my Dell laptop until I fiddled around with (and eventually disabled display power management) On the same screen where you select your screensaver, select 'Display' and then select the 'Power Control' tab. Here you can manage the powersave functions.

Thanks for the replies. I have turned the powersave function off both in yast and kde, so that cant be the problem. I am interested in the kde screensavers as they look very good, I am going to look at those permission issues and try to figure this out.

I did some googeling and this seems to be a KDE bug, so no luck there :(

try to check if the user who is trying to run the video is in a group called "video" (or has acces to /dev/whateveritwas), or see if it works as root.
btw, are you 100% sure that the video card is configured correctly and working? (try typing "glxgears" see what framerate you get)

Running the command xscreensaver should list all the screensavers KDE has and maybe a few others. I am leaning to a permission issue as the corrupt.
