I have SUSE 9.1 on my computer and I would like to ask a minor question about it. I would like to know how I can keep my screensaver from turning into a black screen after a couple of minutes of being on.

Are you using the KDE screensavers or xscreensaver. There is usually an option to configure this in the KDE control center if using KDE screesavers or by running xscreensaver-demo if using another desktop environment.

There's a checkbox on the control panel screensaver settings page called "Make aware of power management".

If you turn that off, it should stop blanking out your screen.

I thought I had solved the problem when I unchecked the power management box but it still does the same thing, what could be my problem?

In xscreensaver, I think there is also an option for "blank screen after." Is that checked?

I can make the screensaver come out now and it runs while my computer is on . When I shutdown my computer and turn it back on xscreensaver does not come up automatically as my default screensaver, how can I make it do this every time I turn my computer on. Is this possible or do I have to do it manually every time I want to activate xscreensaver?

Sorry for the late reply - I've been at work for a while.

Do you have anything for xscreensaver in your kde autostart folder? How about in your .xinitrc file? When you say it doesn't come back when you reboot/shut down, those are the first two files that I think of.

What I do is add xscreensaver& to my .xinitrc. That makes it start right after x starts. An alternative to that is to put an entry into you ~/.kde/Autostart folder so that KDE (instead of just x) runs xscreensaver when it starts. I'm currently searching the site now for the actual code to put in the Autostart...I'll post again when I find it.
