Unhappy screen resolution stuck at 1024 x 768

I have installed OpenSUSE 10.1. The installation went smoothly, except for the fact that default resolution for my 15 inches monitor was detected as 1024 x 768. But I want it to be 800 x 600. I opened up yast and changed the sax2 setting to 800 x 600. After clicking test and then save, it told me the display will be changed next time the display manager starts. I restarted, but found the resolution to be still stuck at 1024 x 768. I've tried logging in graphically as root to do this, as well as clicking save button directly instead of clicking test first. Nothing seems to work.

I opened up /etc/X11/xorg.conf. But the comment header at the top of the file says that this file is generated by sax2 and should not be edited manually. I tried opening this file before and after changing the resolution using sax2, and found that this file does change after my configuration, setting the display to 800 x 600. But the file reverts back to it's original condition once I reboot. How do I get the changes to stick?

I have the same problem, the whole desktop was small. I ended up doing a new install and it still ended up with 1024x768 but listed it on a 19 inch screen even though it is 17 inch monitor. I have installed suse 10.1 on 3 boxes and this one is the only one I have had a problem with. I believe the problem is with the video driver. When I did try and adjust the settings in X config it crashed.

Angry xorg.conf not changed by sax2

My problem persisted (see my previous post in this thread), so I asked my local LUG about it. The answer I got was sax2 has some bug and that I'll have to edit xorg.conf manually. My plan was to change the resolution to 800 x 600 using sax2, copy the freshly changed xorg.conf file somewhere, and then reboot. When the file reverted back to the configuration for 1024 x 768, I would overwrite it with the file I previously copied. But now I'm facing an even bigger problem. Upon rebooting, I found that xorg.conf now had the configuration for 800 x 600, but the screen resolution was still 1024 x 768. I tried changing the resolution to many other values using sax2, including 640 x 480; but upon every reboot xorg.conf still has the configuration for 800 x 600, while my screen resolution is still 1024 x 768. Please help, what do I do to lower my screen resolution to 800 x 600? Will patching sax2 (if indeed it has a bug) fix the problem? If so, what's the best way to go on about it?

You guys should check into this thread. It starts on about page 3 talking about 915resolution. It is already installed on your system if you are running 10.2, and if not you can install it. Read up on these posts and you may find what you are looking for.

Ever consider running
Code:
xorgconf
in a Bash shell?

Just make sure you know the monitor frequencies and the video driver name when you want to take the full control.

cueman and saikee thanks, I'm planning on upgrading to 10.2 this next week. If I still have the problem will try the suggestions and post the results back on this thread even though I'm not the originator.

Yeah. In 10.0 that one crashes after briefly showing some graphics .
