This was a problem for me. I solved it by going to SaX2 and getting rid of the detected monitor and setting the monitor up as a VESA 1024x768 @ 85Hz. You need to go into the Test server to adjust the geometry. Sometimes SaX2 will not allow the geometry to fill up the screen; in that case the refresh rates may have to be experimented with. DO NOT go above or below the Monitor's Refresh specifications as damage may occur. If this does not help, you might want to manually edit the xorg.conf file to only include the monitor resolutions and refresh rates that you desire. You can do this by commenting out the sections that are above your maximum resolution.

Be sure to backup your xorg.conf file prior to working on it just incase.

Also did you make the xorg.conf file Read Only for some reason? I doubt that you did, but worth asking.

Beyond that I am not sure what to tell you.

thanks everyone for trying, sometimes there is no answer for the simplest things.

i formatted.

not a big deal, since i'd only been a few weeks on the new level.

the re-installation went fine and my monitor is now registered properly at the high res.

thanks again,

onezan.

You had an install issue? That you had to reinstall? Did you have errors when you first installed the system? If so what were they?

Sorry to ask questions, but it helps me give better advise to other people.

no, there were no install issues.

when i said re-install, i meant, this morning (after suffering for about a week with the monitor problems) i gave up trying to fix it and just formatted the disk.

thanks again,

o.
