Angry RPM error when trying to install an rpm


I get this error when trying to install a rpm, I have no idea what it is or means, any help would be greatly apreciated! Oh yea and im using Suse 10.0 32bit


error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

You need to be root.

If I install it using root user wont I have to be root user to even use the program? If thats the case should I just use root user as my default account? Sorry for the dumb questions but im a linux newb :P

no u dont need to be root to use the program if installed as root

and running as root defualt isnt really a good idea... alot of people move to linux for security reasons... running as root fulltime defeats some of the purpose.. u might aswell boot up win98se
